The Vietnam and Cambodia Tour

PRICE: from £2,995 per person (based on Two Persons Sharing Twin/Double Room) including international flights from UK.

Day 1: UK to Hanoi

Depart London or your regional airport on your flight to Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi

Arrive in Hanoi. Met on arrival and transfer to the La Siesta Hotel or similar. The rest of the day is free.

Day 3: Hanoi

A city tour of Hanoi which includes Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, his stilt house in the grounds of the presidential palace, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Then visit the Temple of Literature, the West Lake with the Tran Quoc Pagoda (one of the oldest in Vietnam), Quan Thanh Temple, and the impressive Museum of Ethnology which records the lives and cultures of Vietnam's ethnic minorities. A visit to the Sword Lake and Ngoc Son Temple is followed by a one hour cyclo ride around the Old Quarter. In the evening, enjoy a traditional water puppet show (B, L)

Day 4: Halong Bay

After breakfast, travel to Halong Bay (about a three-hour drive). On arrival, board your traditional-style junk before starting your cruise around the spectacular Halong Bay, with its myriad of islands. Includes a seafood dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Halong Bay to Hue

Continue your cruise and enjoy a leisurely brunch before returning to the dock for a transfer to Hanoi Airport for your flight to Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. You then transfer to Cherish Hotel or a similar option. (B, L)

Day 6: Hue

Take a boat trip on the Perfume River to visit the Thien My Pagoda. Then visit the Imperial Citadel, the former imperial palace of Vietnam's rulers, and the lavish mausoleums of Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. End the day with a stroll around the Dong Ba Market, a lively central market selling a wide range of goods. (B, L)

Day 7: Hue to Hoi An

Depart Hue for Hoi An, crossing the Hai Van Pass and with a stop at the picturesque fishing village of Lang Co. En-route, you also visit the Cham Museum at Danang, and the Marble Mountain. After lunch, take a walking tour of Hoi An, and ancient town that was once one of Asia's major ports. Visit the Japanese Covered Bridge, Phuc Kien Temple, old merchants' houses, and the colourful market. You then stay at the Silk Village Resort or a similar option. (B, L)

Day 8: Hoi An/My Son

Excursion to My Son, once the administrative and religious centre of the Champa Kingdom which flourished between the 4th and 15th centuries. View the impressive brick towers that dominate the site. Return to Hoi An after lunch for a free afternoon. (B, L)

Day 9: Danang to Saigon

Transfer to Danang Airport for a flight to Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon. Visit the Reunification Palace - the former presidential palace of South Vietnam, the War Renmants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the General Post Office, and Ben Thanh market. End the day with a dinner cruise on the Saigon River. You then stay at Golden Central Hotel or similar. (B, L, D)

Day 10: Saigon

An excursion into the countryside to see the Cu Chi tunnels, part of the network of tunnels built by Vietnamese guerrilla fighters during the Vietnam war to shelter from US attacks. You then have the afternoon free. (B)

Day 11: Mekong Delta

An excursion to the Mekong Delta. Travel by road to Ben Tre where you join a local ferry to cross the Mekong River. This takes you to mid-river islands, where you can explore orchards and fields and experience the life of local people. Then take a small sampan boat to cruise small canals that are lined with water coconuts. (B, L, D)

Day 12: Saigon to Siem Reap

Transfer to airport for flight to Siem Reap in neighbouring Cambodia. You then travel to the Angkor Sayana Hotel or similar. In the afternoon, you’ll board a boat to explore the Tonle Sap Lake, one of the largest inland lakes in Asia, to discover the 'floating villages' around the shores. In the evening enjoy a buffet dinner with an Apsara dance show. (B, L, D)

Day 13: Siem Reap

Visit the Roluos group of temples (Lolei, Preah Ko, and Bakhong) built by the early Angkorian rulers in the 8th and 9th centuries. Enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside on a cow cart ride, a fun way to get in touch with rural Cambodia and its friendly people. Your destination is Roluos Pagoda, where Buddhist monks will celebrate a private blessing ceremony for you, wishing your health and a safe journey - a memorable experience! After lunch, visit the ancient walled capital of Angkor Thom dating from the 12th century. This includes a visit to the South Gate, the Bayon Temple, unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avalokitesvara, the Phimeanakas, the Royal Enclosure, the Elephant Terrace, and the Terrace of the Leper King. DAY 14: Siem Reap

In the morning, visit Ta Prohm Temple, one of the area’s most beautiful temples, still engulfed in jungle. After lunch, you’ll visit the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor, Angkor Wat, considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. We remain here until sundown to enjoy the sunset from Phnom Bakheng Hill. (B, L)

Day 15: Siem Reap

Phnom Kulen is one of the earliest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Cambodia. A short 3km trek up the hill through dense jungle will reward you with excellent views over the plains and the Kulen hills. At the top, the "River of 1000 Lingas" has some remarkable stone carvings of Hindu gods, animals and other symbols in the river bed. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the waterfall. On the way back, you will visit Banteay Srei Temple. The special charm of this temple lies in its compact size, remarkable state of preservation, and the excellence of its decorative carvings. Day 16: Siem Reap to UK

Transfer to airport for flight to Bangkok. You then connect to an onward flight back to the UK, and arrive on the morning of day 17. (B)
