Depart London Heathrow on international flight to Hanoi.
Arrive in Hanoi. You are transferred to the May de Ville Hotel or similar. The rest of the day is free.
In the morning start your city tour of Hanoi with the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, stilt house and One Pillar Pagoda. Then visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, founded in the 11th century. Then visit the Hoan Kiem Lake with the Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple, and a walking tour around the busy streets of the Old Quarter. Optional "Quintessance of Tonkin" show in the evening, combining sound and light show, dance and water puppetry in a spectacular production. (B)
After breakfast, drive through the countryside to Ninh Binh province and Hoa Lu, the early capital of the Vietnamese kingdom, founded in the 10th century. Visit two old temples, one dedicated to king Dinh Then Hoang and the other to the succeeding Le Dynasty. Lunch at local restaurant with traditional food. Then travel on to Trang An, for a ride a small boat through the dramatic landscape of limestone karst hills, rice paddy fields. Visit some of the caves along the route. Return to Hanoi. (B, L)
After breakfast depart through the Red River Delta for Halong Bay, a World Heritage site, famous for its scenic islets scattered across the waters of the bay. Board your traditional junk, enjoy a tasty seafood lunch, and cruise through the bay before returning to dock late afternoon and returning to Hanoi. (B, L)
After breakfast, transfer to airport for flight to the central city of Danang. Met on arrival and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free. (B)
Day trip to the former imperial capital of Hue. Travel over the Hai Van Pass, stopping to take in the dramatic panoramic views. Once in Hue, visit the Thai Dinh mausoleum. Then after lunch, visit the Imperial Citadel, the former palace of Vietnam's emperors between 1802 and 1945, and the Thien Mu Pagoda, by the banks fo the Perfume River. Return to Danang. (B, L)
Today visit the Ba Na Hills, where an old colonial hill station has been transformed into Vietnam's own version of Disneyland. Marvel at the spectacular views from the world's longest cable car system, or explore the dramatic and striking Golden Bridge at an altitude of 1400m above sea level. Games and rides for all ages are available at Fantasy Park. In late afternoon transfer to Hoi An, the historic town that was once one of Asia's busiest trading ports. (B, L)
In the morning take an excursion to My Son, once the religious centre of the Champa kingdom that flourished in central Vietnam between the 4th and 13th centuries. Impressive remains of its brick temple towers survive. Return to Hoi An. In the afternoon enjoy a walking tour around the old town, visiting the Japanese covered bridge, ancient merchants' houses, Chinese temples and halls, and craft workshops. Optional tour: open-air evening sound and light show called Hoi An Memories. (B)
Transfer to Danang airport for flight to Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon. Transfer to Muong Thanh Saigon Centre Hotel (B)
Visit to the Cu Chi tunnel complex, created by guerrilla fighters during the Vietnam War to shelter from US bombing. Return to the city for a tour of the highlights, including the Reunification Palace - formerly the presidential palace of South Vietnam - General Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, Cholon/Chinatown and finally the Ben Thanh Market. Travel to My Tho in the Mekong Delta. Cross the Tien River by motor boat to Thoi Son Island. Visit local rural industries such as brick-making, mats, and coconut sweets to learn about traditional techniques. Stop at a farmer's house to enjoy tropical fruits. After lunch at a local restaurant, take a rowed sampan trip through the narrow backwater canals before changing to a motorised boat to take you to the pier to join your transport for the ride back to Saigon. Free day until transfer to airport for flights back to London Heathrow, arriving either later the same day or early the following morning depending on airline schedules. (B)
