A tour into Japan's feudal past with visits concentrating on historic towns and some of the great castles built in Japan during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Discover lesser-known gems such as the postal towns of Tsumago and Magone, plus of course the many sights of the former capital of Kyoto.

Day 1: Tokyo

Depart London or regional airport for your flight to Tokyo.

Day 2: Tokyo

Once you arrive in Tokyo, you are met by our representative and helped on your bus. You then travel to your hotel and have the rest of the day free.

Day 3: Tokyo

Morning tour of Tokyo including the Tokyo Tower, the Imperial Palace East Garden, and Meiji Shrine, also driving past the National Diet Building (Parliament). The tour finishes in the Ginza shopping district. You have the afternoon free to relax or explore further on your own.

Day 4: Tokyo to Nikko

Excursion to the town of Nikko, and a visit to the Nikko Toshogu shrine. This is the mausoleum of the powerful shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. After a Japanese-style lunch, visit Lake Chuzenji and the Kegon Falls before you return to Tokyo. (L)

Day 5: Tokyo to Hakone

Travel to the iconic Mt Fuji by coach, ascending about half way up the mountain. Your heavy luggage will be transported to Takayama, so take an overnight bag for your stay in Hakone. After a Japanese-style lunch, proceed to the Hakone National Park where you will take a boat cruise on Lake Ashi, and ride in a cable car to see the splendid views. At the end of the tour return to Tokyo. (L)

Day 6: Tokyo to matsumoto

Travel by train to Matsumoto. Free time in Matsumoto, but make sure you visit the beautiful Matsumoto Castle, known as "Crow Castle" because of its black exterior, and then wander around the traditional Nakamachi district of merchants' houses.

Day 7: matsumoto to tsumago

Today travel by train and bus to the old postal town of Tsumago. This was one of the settlements on the Nakasendo postal route between Kyoto and Edo (as Tokyo was then called). You can walk along the route through beautiful forest scenery to the next town, Magome, which has also been preserved. Overnight at traditional Japanese guesthouse, or "minshuku", with futon beds. Day 8: Tsumago to kyoto

Travel to Kyoto by train via Nagoya. On arrival make your own way to your nearby hotel. Rest of the day free.

Day 9: kyoto/nara

Morning tour around Kyoto, visiting Nijo Castle, the former residence of the Tokugawa Shogun, the Kinakakuji Temple (the Golden Pavilion) and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. In the afternoon, travel to the former capital of Nara to visit the Todaiji Temple, housing Japan's largest bronze image of the Buddha, Deer Park, and the Kasuga shrine with its 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns. Day 10: Kyoto

Free day in Kyoto.

Day 11: kyoto TO HIMEJI

In the morning take the train to Himeji. Your heavy luggage will be transported direct to Osaka. Visit Himeji Castle, considered one of the greatest and most beautiful castles in Japan, dating from the late 16th/early 17th century. After such, travel to Maiko by train. Walk along the Maiko Marine Promenade and see the Akashi Kaikyo suspension bridge, one of the longest in the world. Return to Himeji by train. (L)

Day 12: HImeji to hiroshima

Explore Himeji on your own before train to Hiroshima. Own way to hotel nearby.

In the morning take the bullet train to Osaka. Rest of the time free to explore Osaka, for example Osaka Castle or the vibrant Dotonbori district. (B)

Day 13: hiroshima

Full day tour in Hiroshima and nearby Miyajima Island. First visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and museum, and the Atomic Bomb Dome. Then take the ferry to Miyajima Island to visit the beautiful Itsukushima Shrine and the iconic "floating" red torii gate. (L)

Day 14: hiroshima to Osaka

In the morning take the bullet train to Osaka. Rest of the time free to explore Osaka, for example Osaka Castle or the vibrant Dotonbori district. (B)

Day 15: Exit

Transfer to Kyoto Kansai Airport by airport bus for your flight back to the UK.
